Although Josephine Baker may be well known for her banana costume, that is only one of a million other things. Ms. Baker was the first black woman to star in a major motion picture, Zouzou in 1934, or to become a world-famous entertainer. Oftentimes Baker refused to perform at venues that were segregated in the United States. She is also noted for her contributions to the Civil Rights Movement and in 1968 was offered unofficial leadership in the movement in the United States by Coretta Scott King, following Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination; however, she declined that offer. Josephine Baker's activism was also prevalent across sees; she was also known for assisting the French Resistance during World War II and received the French military honor, the Croix de guerre and was made a Chevalier of the Légion d'honneur by General Charles de Gaulle.
